The co-founders of
micro-blogging phenomenon Twitter have launched a brand new self-publishing
platform, called Medium.
The site is the latest project
of Biz Stone and Ev Williams who are also backing Branch – a public discourse
platform that came to light in March. The fledgling Medium allows the user to
curate a selection of images, articles and text – seemingly like a higher-brow
version of Pinterest.
"Medium is designed to allow people to choose the level
of contribution they prefer,” Williams says in a preview of the service. “We
know that most people, most of the time, will simply read and view content,
which is fine. If they choose, they can click to indicate whether they think
something is good, giving feedback to the creator and increasing the likelihood
others will see it.”
Williams describes posting on
the site as being “elegant and easy,” and members can enjoy the network
“without the burden of becoming a blogger or worrying about developing an
audience.”
You can sign up to Medium using
your Twitter account and vote on the pieces you like in other members’
“collections”. Like Branch, full use of Medium is invite-only at this stage,
with no word about full open access just yet.
Williams has a strong history
of leading self-publishing platforms, having launched the popular Blogger well
before we even knew what ‘tweeting’ meant. He and Stone have scaled back their
involvement in Twitter over the past year as they pursue new projects - of
which we are beginning to see the fruits.
The social network favourite
continues to grow regardless, as the acquisition of app-testing firm Clutch.io
was announced yesterday.
